A Witchcraft Ritual to Welcome the Sun
As winter casts its icy spell upon the world, there is a certain magic that lingers in the frosty air – a magic that calls upon us to connect with the celestial forces that govern our existence. In the heart of this winter darness, we find ourselves drawn to the enchanting ritual of welcoming the sunrise, a sacred ceremony that invites us to embrace the first light of day and celebrate the rebirth of the sun. One of my witch sisters called me yesterday evening whether I feel like participating in a winter sunrise riutal today morning. As the sky was clear and moderate frost was expected for the night it should be possible to welcome the rising sun with an old witchcarft ritual.
Preparation
We met at 5:30 in the morning at a small parking lot. After the usual hugs and kisses we climbed up a small hill in the magic light of the (nearly) full moon. The moon light, the crisp and frost-kissed morning, with the anticipation of the approaching sunrise palpable in the air ... it was an exciting, special atmosphere that we both enjoyed very much. As we climbed the hill hand in hand we got quieter and quieter to unite our spirits for the upcoming ritual.
Before embarking on a spiritual journey, it's essential to not only prepare the mind but also the physical space. We had selected a place surrounded by nature, where we were in harmony with the elements. We use that place often for our rituals.
Preparing our Ritual Place |
We created an altar adorned with winter foliage, crystals, and symbols representing the sun. We assembled candles in hues of gold and orange to invoke the warmth of the sun. Finally we lighted some frankincense, placed some herby like zinnamon and myrrh to enhance the atmosphere with their fragrant energies.

Welcoming the Sun
As the first light begins to grace the horizon we began the the ritual by grounding ourselves, connecting with the earth beneath and the sky above. My sister and I dived into a deep meditation to attune our energies with the natural world.

With the rising sun as our focal point, we initiated the ceremony with songs of praise and gratitude. Words of ancient Latin chants echoed through the winter air, creating a harmonious resonance that linked us to the cosmic dance of the universe. As the sun inches higher, we offered prayers of intention, expressing our desires for warmth, growth, and personal transformation.
Dance into the First Sunbeams
We reached a level of trance and started to dance together in celebration of this cosmic alignment. The crunch of frost beneath our feet, the rhythm of our movements synchronized with the energy of the sunrise - our dance was an expression of joy, freedom, and connection to the natural world.

The first sunbeams illuminated the landscape, casting a golden glow upon the us. We reveled the warmth of the sun's rays on our skin, letting it penetrate our being and invigorate our spirit. As we twirled and swayed, we envisioned the sun infusing us with its vital energy, bringing light to the darkest corners of our souls.

Cuddling and Tea Time
At the end of our ritual my witch sister and I shared a moment of stillness. We basked in the energy we've collectively summoned and felt the unity with the earth, the sun, and each other. Exhausted yet revitalized, we wrapped ourselves in a blanket and huddled together on a nearby bench, savoring the shared warmth and the camaraderie of the moment having a cup of hot tea.
I take none of these moments for granted. I consider them as a gift and reward. During the state of trance I am able to reach with the help of my fellow sisters, their support and open minds I can experience to be a woman. I am not simply a feminized man any more, I am a woman on her way becoming a witch!
In closing, let us pay homage to the sun with one of our centuries-old traditional prayers:
Sol, lux vitae et ignis divinus,
Te salutamus, creator omnium.
In tua luce renascimur,
Per tua viam veritatis sequimur.
Translation:
Sun, light of life and divine fire,
We salute you, creator of all.
In your light, we are reborn,
Through your path, we follow the way of truth.
